Black History Month prides itself in providing quality programming for the university and surrounding communities that is mostly free and open to the public.

**All events in color are planned by the 2012 BHM committee**




BHM Scavenger Hunt:

Monday, February 6th- Friday, February, 10th

Campus-wide hunt identifying Black History related information.

How to Participate:
-Each day, a black history related question will be posted on the event's Facebook page containing directions to a clue somewhere on campus.
-The first person to find the clue, answer the question, and check in on the facebook event page will receive 1 point.
-The person with the most points at the end of the week will receive a FREE FISS TICKET!

Soul of Africa: African Dance Workshop

Hosted by African Student Union & Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

In the continent of Africa, dance has always been a way of expression. Stories have been passed down through many generations, with movements that exemplify hope, pain and love. We plan to share these traditions during our event. Our main focus is to educate the public about West African dance; how it is a remedy to the body, how it showcases tradition and how it tells a story. We plan to focus on the history of African dance and show how it influences modern day American and Caribbean dance.

Our Annual Poetry Nights has a twist! In recognition of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, BHM presents a night of information and entertainment. Guests will be educated on statistics, prevention methods and facts regarding HIV/AIDS through the performing arts to include dance, music, theatre, poetry, and visual arts. This event is co-sponsored by RCP, Iota Phi Theta, Inc., BASE, and PRIDE.

We will be exploring the class system that is taking place in the African American community.  We will begin with the history of how divisions amongst the African American people came about. We will breakdown stereotypical terms found in the Black community such as "ghetto" and "bougie."  We will then discuss various examples of this particular class system including the way in which Blacks are depicted in media, sports, and other forms of entertainment.  We will conclude by examining this phenomenon right here on the UF campus.

Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant

Hosted by the Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant is an outgrowth of the long standing tradition of Alpha Phi Alpha to recognize the intelligence, strength, and beauty of the women in our communities. The event showcases the poise and talent of our lovely contestants as well as the philanthropic efforts of the Theta Sigma Chapter and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As a reward for the winning contestant, first and second runners-up, the chapter presents scholarships in the amounts of $1,000, $300 and $200 respectively. The production itself includes choreographed dance performance, audience participation, support of various campus and community organizations and so much more!

Black Male Extravaganza (BME)

In the fall of 1992 Bryan Burton had a vision to assemble a cast of black men together as a symbol of Greatness, Power, and Perfection. Out of this vision, Black Male Extravaganza (BME) was created. BME is a Broadway scale, theatrical production featuring a cast of talented black males. The production features elaborate dance numbers, songs, and a captivating storyline to educate audiences about the rich history and contemporary plights of black males.

UF's Best Dance crew is a dance competition based off of the MTV hit show "America's Best Dance Crew." Teams will compete to be known as the best dance crew on campus by performing and incorporating various challenges that symbolize aspects of Black history.
